There have been a lot of mixed feelings as the former Vice President (during the Olusegun Obasanjo regime from 1999 to the year 2007) and the contesting Politician for the president, Atiku Abubakar won the primaries for PDP (People’s Democratic Party). Some Nigerians were super excited about it, while some others were angry and the remaining was indifferent about it. This article is to bring out relevant information about the political buoyant man, to know more about him before the 2019 general presidential election.

EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION OF ATIKU ABUBAKAR

He was born on the 25th of November, 1946 (age 72) in Jada, Adamawa State, Nigeria to a family where his father, Garba Abubakar is a farmer and trader, and his mother, who is the second wife of his father, Aisha Kande. He was the second child of his parent till his elder sister died and he became the only child. His parent divorced for some time and in the year 1957, his father died and his mother remarried but she also died of heart attack in the year 1984.
His education did not start early enough as his father was strongly against the idea of western education, but as the News got to people about his father not allowing him go to school, the father was arrested and that gave him the opportunity to enroll into the school in his Village, Jada Primary School when he was 8 years old. After he completed his primary school education, he then proceeded to continue his secondary education at Adamawa Provincial Secondary School in Yola, Adamawa State, which ran through the year 1960 to the year 1965. He proceeded to the police college in Kaduna State, Nigeria, and then later moved to Kano where he got admitted into the School of Hygiene and got a diploma degree.
In 1967, he was granted a full time scholarship to study law in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in Kaduna State, and finished after two years and bagged a Law Diploma and got employed immediately he finished his studies into the Nigerian Custom Service.

HIS WIVES AND CHILDREN

Atiku Abubakar has been married to four different women, but had to divorce one of them to marry another, which means he still has four wives currently, they are;

TITILAYO ALBERT

When he was staying at Ogun State (Idiroko), he met her, and at that time she was just 19 years old, their parent were initially against their relationship, but in the year 1971, he secretly married her and on the 26th of October in the year 1972, she gave birth to his first child.
CHILDREN: Fatima (First Child), Adamu (second), Halima (third) and Aminu (forth).

LADI YAKUBU (DIVORCED)

Seven years after his union with Titilayo, Atiku took in a second wife, Ladi, according to him; the reason why he took a second wife was to expand the Abubakar’s Family because he had no brothers and sisters. He actually expanded the Abubakar’s family as he promised as she bore him six children before their divorce.
CHILDREN: Abba (First), Atiku, Zainab, Hauwa, Mariam, Rukayat.

PRINCESS RUKAYAT

The Abubakar’s family expansion continued as Atiku took in a third wife in the 1983, Princess Rukayat who was from a noble background as her father is the Late “Lamido of Adamawa State, Aliyu”.
CHILDREN: Aisha (First), Hadiza, Aliyu, Asmau, Mustapha, Laila, Abulsalam.

FATIMA SHETTIMA

In 1986, he got married to Fatima who gave birth to seven children for him, which includes also two sets of twins.
CHILDREN: Amina, Muhammed, Ahmed, Shehu, Zainab, Aisha, Hasfat.

JENNIFER (LAST WIFE)

His faith permits that a man is only to have a maximum of four wives in his home, so Atiku had to divorce one of his wives, Ladi Yakubu to marry Jennifer.

ATIKU ABUBAKAR NET WORTH, HOUSES AND BUSINESSES

Atiku is one of the richest businessmen in Nigeria, according to Forbes 2018; he is worth about $1.8 Billion, which was accrued from all the businesses he ventured into and also politics.
He has a couple of houses which he built in his early days as a real estate person, his first ever house was built when he was still a custom officer in Yola. He took a loan of N31 Thousand and placed the house on rent and from the proceeds made from the rent, he got another plot of land and built a second house and continued the expansion. He is also the proud owner of one of the biggest university in Nigeria, The American University of Nigeria.

POLITICAL AMBITIONS

  •          In 1990, he contested for the governorship position. He started by winning the primaries of the election but was later disqualified from running.
  •         In 1992, he ran for the presidential position, and was also disqualified along the line.
  •         In 1999, he became the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria during the President Olusegun Obasanjo’s two term regime.
  •         In 2018, he won the primaries under PDP to be running for the presidential position in the year 2019.

     FORMER PRESIDENT OLUSEGUN OBASANJO FINALLY APPROVES ATIKU ABUBAKAR

Initially, the former president of the federal Republic of Nigeria, President Olusegun Obasanjo doubted the competence of his former Vice, Atiku Abubakar ruling Nigeria. But after a meeting together with the former president in his residence, he finally aprroved him saying he has mended and repositioned himself. also present at the meeting were Bishop David Oyedepo (the general overseer of the Living Faith Church Worldwide), Kukah and Sheikh Gumi.
