FIVE FAMOUS CHURCHES IN NIGERIA: HOW THEY STARTED AND EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THEM

It is one thing to attend a particular church, but the question is that ‘how much do you know about it?’. It is very vital to know how your church came about which constitutes the history of the church, who actually started it among others. This article is aimed at bringing you that information right where you sit, so enjoy.
A selection process was done and these five churches came top on our list, they are; The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Living Faith Church Worldwide (LFC), Mountain of Fire Ministries (MFM), Deeper Life Church and finally Salvation Ministry.

REDEEMED CHRISTIAN CHURCH OF GOD (RCCG)

Although surrounded by Idol worshippers and promoters, the founder o the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Reverend Josiah O. Akindayomi was still in pursuit of the higher power as he knew that one existed. He was born in the July 1909 and grew up with his family, the Akindayomi Family in Ondo State, Nigeria. He had no opportunity of Going to school like other of his peers, so he could neither read nor write.
Still in his pursuit, God led Rev. Josiah to get baptized at the Church Missionary Society in the year 1927, and then he joined the Cherubim and Seraphim church as he was not still satisfied. While worshipping at C&S, God sent a word to him saying “You will be my servant”, but he ignored the call completely as at that time as it was never his intention to become a servant of God, but the voice kept on coming to him for seven years. For the seven years, he tried venturing into several businesses but they crashed, he was in debt and he was without peace, but each and every time this happened, he found himself coming back to God and asking for his grace, it was this grace that sustained him during that period.
After the seven years of trials and tribulations, he finally succumbed to the voice of God saying “Lord, I will go wherever you want me to go”, but still went further to ask God for a confirmation to show that it is truly him and God gave to him some scriptures; Rom 8:29-31, Isa 41:10-13 and Jer 1:4-10, all showing that he is the same God. God also gave him an assurance that he will supply all his needs as he is not going to be paid any salary anymore.
He got married to his wife when he was Aged 32 (1941), but still continued to worship at C & S till 1952 when he left as he felt that the church was not deviating from the living word of God. After he left, he started a little house fellowship at his home, it was called the “Ogo Oluwa Fellowship” meaning the “Glory of God” fellowship and it was located at Willoughby Street in Ebute Meta, Lagos. The fellowship started with a small number of 9, but catapulted to a very large number as people got to hear of the miracles happening there.
He had no educational history whatsoever, so he could neither read nor write (otherwise termed as a n illiterate), but when God visited him through a vision, he was able to write down the name of the church on a blackboard, it was written in English and he called an educated Lieutenant to interpret him for him and it reads “The Redeemed Church of God”.
When it was almost time for Pa Akindayomi to go and meet his maker, God revealed to him who is successor is going to be, he told him then that his successor is not yet a member of the church and he is well educated. After some time, a young man who was a lecturer of Mathematics at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) joined his church to worship, his name was Enoch Adeboye. Immediately Pa Akindayomi saw him, he knew he was the one God had chosen, so he started grooming him up in the ways of the Lord, he was at one point the interpreter (From the native language “Yoruba” to English) in the church.
Some hours to his death, Pa Akindayomi sent for Pastor Enoch Adeboye to give to him the plans God has for the church, including the structures, visions among others.

WHAT ARE THE MISSION AND VISIONS OF RCCG

The vision and mission of the church as given by God are;
  •       To make heaven: which is the ultimate, and this can be accomplished by making holiness a lifestyle.
  •        To take as many people with us: That is done by spreading the word through evangelizing to others
  •          To have a member of the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Every Family of all nations.
  •      To accomplish the second and third vision, the church will plant churches within 5 minutes walking distances in the city and towns of developing nations and 5 minutes driving distance in cities and towns of developed nations.

LIVING FAITH CHURCH WORLD WIDE (LFC)

The Living Faith Church was founded by Bishop David Oyedepo. Ever since he was a young boy, he had always carried a strong passion for God wherever he goes. When he was still a primary and secondary school student, while his friends play around, he would locate himself to a quiet place to be with God. There was a time when he went to a small village and during his stay there he asked them in the community if there was any church there and they replied that there wasn’t, he further asked that even a catholic church? And they said none, he then knelt down to talk to God and said “LORD, may I never leave this place the same way I met it”, and before he left the village, a church was set up there and on the day he was to go, the oldest man in the village gave him a mysterious gift “A lantern” and told him that “The light you have shined on our village, let it shine all over the world”.
When he was 26 years old, the voice of God came onto him saying “Seek a quiet place, I want to meet with you”, then he booked for a hotel close by and had an 18-hour encounter with God. God told him in the vision that “Now the hour has come to liberate the world from the oppression of the devil through the preaching of the word of faith, and I am sending you to undertake this task”. After the full 18 hours, the word of the Lord came to him saying “Stand up and follow me”.
About 2 years after the encounter, the church started in Kaduna with a small number of 4, he humorously said one time that when they started, the church was with three and a half members because three were sure and the fourth was not decided yet. In March 21 to 24 1984, he saw the light of unending supernatural church growth when Jesus walked up to him and respond to his cry of why the church was not growing, giving him four relevant keys as answers to his question. Today, the church can be found in over 65 countries of the world with millions of members.

THE BELIEFS, VISION AND MISSION OF THE LIVING FAITH CHURCH

The living faith church is based on these twelve strong beliefs which includes; Faith, the Word of God, Signs and wonders, the Holy Spirit, Prayer, Prosperity, Healing, Wisdom, Success, Vision, Consecration, Praise.

MOUNTAIN OF FIRE MINISTRIES (MFM)

Mountain of Fire ministries started in the year 1989 in the living room of Pastor Daniel Kolawole Olukoya. It was founded during a prayer meeting when God spoke to him to start up the church. He and his prayer team then set out to look for a location, and they found an abandoned piece of land near the University of Lagos and made it the Church’s headquarter, the first ever service that took place in MFM was on the 24th of April, 1994 and the church kept on growing ever since.

BELIEFS OF THE CHURCH

The church can be regarded as one with the “do it yourself” mandate, where one is trained to wage war and do battle with your own hand. It is a Church focused at building up prayer warriors, intercessors and violent army of God. Today, the church can be found in every state of the Nation.

DEEPER LIFE CHURCH

When you see a true Deeper Life member, you will see holiness written all over, and that has been their trade mark ever since the church started. The church was started by a man who is humble and thinks clearly, he goes by the name W.F Kumuyi popularly known as “the man of God” by his followers. He is a man that can recite the Bible from cover to cover without looking as he has spent productive time searching and researching the scriptures and seeks for every opportunity to apply them and share it to others. He has taken the Word of God to grass root places that have never heard the Word of God and makes it easy for them to understand.
He is a person that put it time to develop the church through hard work and commitment. Today, deeper life church can be found in African countries and out of the shores of Africa, through making Holiness a lifestyle.

SALVATION MINISTRY

Salvation ministry was started by Pastor David Ibiyeomi on the 13th of April, 1997 (21 years ago) with only a small number of 34 members (9 children, 15 adult male and 10 adult female), its headquarter is at Plot 35 Birabi Street GRA 1 Port Harcourt, Nigeria. The church has been experiencing tremendous growth ever since it started, from one service has now become five services every Sunday. The church has developed into Television and Radio broadcasting all around the world.
Pastor Ibiyeomi was born in Rivers State, Bonny Island; he gave his life to Christ in the year 1995 in Living Faith Church. He then went for spiritual classes at Living Faith Church under the direct supervision of Bishop David Oyedepo before God gave him a mandate to start his own ministry (Salvation ministry)
