UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN (U.I): HISTORY, COURSES, CUT-OFF MARKS, SCHOOL FEES AND EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

Out of the numerous universities in Nigeria; federal, state, and private, the University of Ibadan has remained the best in the ranking. Every year, hundreds of thousands of students apply to U.I due to the quality of education, but only a few thousands are needed. As at last year, about 100,000 students applied to University of Ibadan and only 10,000 were needed. My question then was what will happen to the remaining 90,000 students? But that is not the focus of this article; this article is aimed at giving information about the school as a whole.

BRIEF HISTORY OF UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN

The University of Ibadan can be referred to as the building block for other Nigerian University as it was the first ever to be started in Nigeria. It started in the year 1948 before Nigeria gained her independence, but started operating as an independent university in the year 1962 as it was formerly a college of the University of London.
The university kicked off with Art, Science and Medicine programmes but has now integrated into sixteen (16) different faculties, which are all vibrant in their academic endeavors.

COLLEGES AND COURSES OFFERED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN

There are so many courses offered at the University of Ibadan that can be picked from easily, they include;
  • COLLEGE OF PHARMACY: Pharmacy.
  • SCHOOL OF LAW: Law.
  • SCHOOL OF VETERINARY MEDICINE: Veterinary Medicine.
  • COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY: Civil Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Agro and Environmental Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Industrial Production Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Wood product Engineering, Food Engineering.
  • COLLEGE OF MEDICINE: Medicine and Surgery, Nursing Science, Biochemistry, Human Nutrition, Physiotherapy, Dentistry.

The school fees vary at various levels of study; the fresher and the returning students. This fee includes the levy with student union dues, GES and accommodation.

  • W.F KUMUYI: General Overseer and founder of the popular Deeper Life Ministry.
  • KAYODE FAYEMI: The Former Minister of Solid Mineral Development.
  • KOLE OMOTOSHO: Nigerian Writer and Advertiser for Telecommunications Company.
  • IYABO OBASANJO BELLO:  The Former Commissioner For Health in Ogun State, A senator in Nigeria for four years, the Chairman of the Senate Health Committee and the daughter of the former Nigerian President, President Olusegun Obasanjo.
  • CHINUA ACHEBE: The award winning, bestselling author, most popular of his books is “Things Fall Apart”.
  • KEN SARO-WIWA: He is an environmental activist, a writer, a T.V producer and is popular for fighting for the rights of the Niger Delta people.
  • WOLE SOYINKA: Born as Akinwande Oluwole Babatunde Soyinka was the first Nigerian ever to be honored with a Nobel Prize in the year 1986. He is a poet, Essayist, Playwright.
  • JAMES MEREDITH: First African student to sustain admission in the highly segregated University of Mississippi, he was a civil right activist, and is known for promoting the march against fear in the year 1996.
  • AMBIMBOLA ROSEMARY ODUKOYA: Before her death, was the popular for her “Singles and Married” ministry, she was also famous for her books on dating, relationships and marriage. She died as a result of the sosoliso plane crash that happened in the year 2005.
  • CHRISTOPHER OKIGBO: He died during Civil war while fighting for the independence of Biafra (in 1967), was a writer, a teacher and a poet.
  • GRACE ALELE WILLIAMS: First female Nigeria to ever emerge as the Vice chancellor of any University, she was the Vice chancellor at the University of Benin. She was also the first female in Nigeria to be a PhD holder (Doctorate degree).
  • IYA ABUBAKAR: Former Minister of Defense and Internal Affairs, He was a senator of Adamawa for two tenures (8 years), was the former Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, he also became a Professor at age 28.
