Jimi Agbaje Biography: Everything You Need To Know About Him + His Political Ambitions


The 2015 Governorship election came and finished and Jimi Agbaje, the governorship aspirant then of Lagos State, Nigeria lost to Governor Ambode. Jimi Agbaje went into extinction for the past 3 years without saying a word or criticizing the administration of Governor Ambode, but few days back he picked the Governorship form for the second time ready to conquer this time. We will be looking into the biography of him today to know more about him and his Governorship ambition before the 2019 Governorship election commences.


His full name is Olujimi Kolawole Agbaje, he was born to the family of Late Chief Julius Kosebinu, who was a banker before his death and his mother Margaret Olabisi who was a teacher on the 2nd of March, 1957 (61 Years Old) in Lagos State, Nigeria. He is the second child out of the five children of his parent, His sibling that is well known to the public is Segun Agbaje, the CEO of GTB (Guaranteed Trust Bank), one of the biggest banks in Nigeria.


Let’s take a brief look at his brother Segun Agbaje, as he is one of the few people who have shaped the banking sector in Nigeria. He was born in the year 1964 (making him 54 years old presently), he is a banker and a big-time entrepreneur. He started his secondary education at St. Gregory College, Lagos and completed it at St. Augustine Academy in Kent. After which he got admitted to study accouting in the University of San Francisco where he had both his BSc degree and master’s degree. He also had his MBA at Harvard Business School.
He is one of the pioneering staffs of Guaranteed Trust Bank, but was initially working at Ernest and Young located in San Francisco, USA. Due to his hard work and dedication in GT Bank, he rose to become the Executive Director of the Bank, in the year 2000 and in 2002, he became the Deputy M.D.
The Managing Director in 2011, Tayo Aderinokun was diagnosed with Severe cancer, so had to take a leave from work, while he was away, Segun Agbaje was made the acting managing director for that period of time, but in June 2011 when Tayo Aderinokun died, Segun Agbaje rose to the position of being the Managing Director and CEO of GT Bank plc. His net worth is estimated to be $17 million.


He had both his primary and secondary school education at St. Gregory’s College in Lagos, and then got admitted into the University of Ife (now referred to as Obafemi Awolowo University), where he got his degree in Pharmacy.


Jimi Agbaje got married to his wife (Abiola Agbaje, formerly had the surname Bankole) at a very young age, that was in 1982 when he was just 25 years old. According to him, he met her in School (University of Ife), when he was in 200 level (second year), and they started dating. Their relationship continued even after graduation from school, she studied law while he studied Pharmacy. Their dated for about seven years, then they went for their youth service and they worked for a year, then got married.
They are blessed with three children now. About a year ago, one of his daughters got married in Lagos and dignitaries were present at her wedding ceremony.


  • He is the founder of JAYKAY pharmaceutical company and chemical company Limited, it was founded in the year 1982, and the same year he got married.
  •   For 7 years, from 1999 to 2006, he was a member of PCN (Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria).
  • In 1987, he was the National Secretary of NAGPP (National Association of General Pharmacy Practice) and was there till 1990 (3 years).
  • In 1994, he took the position as the chairman of the pharmaceutical society of Nigeria and was in office till 1997.
  • From 1989 to 1993, he was a member of the Lagos state Task force checking Fake and Adulterated drugs in Nigeria.


His political ambition started during the era of Moshood Abiola and Bashir Tofa election, he saw the assault on the people of the country and was moved to put a stop to it by all means possible. He then started his activist movement alongside other people with the same drive as himself such as; Pat Utomi, Billy Lawson, Oby Ezekwesili, Ayo Ighadaro, Tola Mobolurin and many others.
In 2007, he joined the Action congress (AC) party in his attempt to try for the Governorship position for Lagos state, but he and eleven others bailed out on the party because there were allegations that the sitiing Governor then, Bola Tinubu already had someone who would succeed him after leaving the Governorship office.
After leaving Action Congress party, Jimi Agbaje joined the Democratic People’s Alliance (DPA) party where he contested for the Governorship position but lost to Babatunde Raji Fashola (who was also a member of Action Congress party).
In 2011, he left the Democratic People’s Alliance Party (DPA) for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and he contested again in the year 2015, but he lost to Akinwumi Ambode, but he has again picked the Governorship form for the upcoming 2019 election and he is giving the assurance that he is going to win this time.

  • He is a fellow at PCPharm (West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacists.
  • He has a merit award at PSN.
