Genevieve Nnaji Biography: Everything You Need To Know + Lion's Heart Movie


Genevieve Nnaji is no newbie in the acting industry anymore; she has been acting when she was a young girl that is at the age of 8. She has been involved in acting different roles in major Nollywood movies and outside Nollywood. There was a rumor as at last year that she was to be in the very popular Hollywood movie ‘Avengers’ under Marvel, but due to some reasons unknown to us, she was not starred in the movie again.
She is one of the actresses in Nigeria who has put smiles on the faces of people viewing her movies and displaying her talent in a unique way. We will be looking into the life of this icon, Genevieve Nnaji, and how she rise to stardom.


At a very young age, she already had the passion for acting full time; she was born on the 3rd of May, 1979 (38 years old) in Mbaise part of Imo State into a family where the father was an Engineer (Theophilus Nnaji) and the mother (Benedicta Nnaji) was a teacher teaching a Nursery school. Among the eight (8) children in her family, she was the fourth, only two are known to the public; Ebuka Nnaji and Stephen Nnaji.


When she was 17, she got pregnant, and according to her, that was one of the most disappointing moments of her life then. She did not expect she would be pregnant because she was careful. She said she did not discover she was pregnant till she was 7 months into it and that has been a mystery to her till date and cannot still explain it. Although her parent were disappointed in her then like most parent would be, but they were still against the idea of her aborting the baby as it was against their faith.


Genevieve gave birth finally to a girl, and she was called Theodora Chimebuka Nnaji. Most of her daughter’s life is hidden as she wants to protect her from the public, but we were able to gather some information about her. She was born in the year 1996 which means she is 22 years old now. She is the graduate of FUTA (Federal University of Technology, Akure), Ondo State. Presently, she has her own makeup business and through her mother’s connections, she has been able to get the contract to make several celebrities up.


Although Genevieve was born in Imo State, Nigeria, but she spent most of her life in Lagos. She had her primary and secondary school education at Methodists Girls College which is located in Yaba, Lagos. After which she got admitted into the University of Lagos (UNILAG) to study Creative Arts where she got her degree.
While she was in the University, she was mixing school work and pursuing her acting goals, she was auditioning for some movie roles in Nollywood while in school. It is also important to know that when she was 8 years old, she acted in a television soap opera named ‘RIPPLES’.


As I stated earlier, she started acting at the age of 8, when she was 19 years old, people got to know about her from the movie she acted ‘Most Wanted’ in 1998. She became the most paid actress in the Nigerian movie industry in the year 2009; also she was the first actress ever in Nigeria to get the award of Best Actress in the City People’s Award in the year 2001. Also in 2003, she broke the record of being the first actress to become the Best Actress in the Censors Board of Nigeria.


Apart from being a very good actress, Genevieve is also a model, she has been featured in several commercials for great companies, the one most people are familiar with is her LUX advert (Face of Lux in 2009). She was also in Pronto commercial, and she is the face of MUD. It may interest you to know that she also has her clothing line which she started in the year 2008; it is called “St. Genevieve”.


She is one of the highest paid Nollywood actresses till date, her net worth is estimated to $ 8 million, why wouldn’t she be? She has signed some great endorsement deals with notable companies, some of which includes;

  • Her N110 million contract with Etisalat, which is regarded as one of the highest in Africa.
  • Her contract with Amstel Malta, it is a big one, but the figures of the contract are kept secret for reasons known to them.
  • Her N22 million contract (endorsement deal) with Range Rover.
She owns a lot of beautiful houses in Nigeria and in Ghana, the ones in Nigeria located in Lekki is worth about N225 million, while that in Ghana is worth a whooping $4 million.
She is a fan of good and luxurious cars, no wonder she has a Range Rover Evogue and Mercedes Benz G-Class to her name.

  • In 2005, she won the Best Actress in a leading role at African Movie Award Academy
  • In 2010, she won the Best Actress in a Tv Series for ‘Guinness Ultimate Survivor.
  • In 2011, she won two awards for the mirror ‘Mirror Boy’, The Best Actress and Breakthrough Performance.
  • In 2012, she won the award for Viewers Choice Female Category.
  • In 2013, she won the Best Actress in a Leading Role for Weekend Gateway.
  • In 2014, she won the ‘Best Actress in a Supporting Role’ for Half of a Yellow Sun, written by Chimamanda Adichie.
  • In 2016, she won the award for ‘Best Movie West Africa’ for Road to Yesterday.

Also she have been nominated for so many awards in the past.


The movie was released on the 7th of September, 2018. Was directed by yours truly, Genevieve Nnnaji. The movie starred various big Nollywood stars such as Nkem Owoh (As Godswill), Pete Edochie (As her Father, Stalwart), Kanayo O. Kanayo.
