An Easter To Remember - A Story By Achiever Omoobajesu

An Easter To Remember - A Story By Achiever Omoobajesu

I kept turning back and forth on my bed, unable to sleep. Again. “Oh God, no! This insomnia has gotten worse than thought.” I became angrier and began to think of the days I had sleepless nights trying to read up for my tests and exams, but every time I saw my result, it was nothing to write home about. I curse the day I started pulling all-nighters just to make it to a first class. All-nighters that never worked out for me. Instead, I ended up with first class insomnia. Suddenly, the sacred voices I heard from the Catholic Church on my street began to echo into my room. They were singing some Easter hymn that evening, the echoes melodiously filling the whole street. I stood up and looked from my window to see what the street looked like at that time of the night. It was dark with a lot of stars sparkled in the dark clouds. It was 12:05 am on Sunday. I hummed along to the melody of the song that echoed. The song was sad but melodious. I saw myself crying all of a sudden, like the lyrics pierced straight into my heart as I sang along.
So, I'll cherish the old rugged cross
Till my trophies at last I lay down
And I will cling to the old rugged cross
And exchange it some day for a crown.
I walked away from the window, laid down on my bed, and sang till I fell asleep.
I woke up with dried tears on my face the next morning, I quickly washed off my face, walked out of the room to get breakfast on the dinning. The house was incredibly quiet, which has never been that way. Where is my mum and younger sister? Could they still be asleep by this time? I rushed to their rooms to check up on them, I saw my mum asleep with dried tears in her eyes! “Seems like everyone had a night to think of everything they’ve been through!” I whispered beneath my tongue as I closed her door quietly. My younger sister was praying in tears when I got to her room. I closed the door quietly too. “What’s going on here? Did the Holy Spirit hover around this street last night? Or is it because it is Easter? Mummy should be awake right now, it is Sunday! What’s happening?” I said as I went back to my mum’s room to wake her up for morning mass. “What’s the time my son?” She said to me as she sniffed her nose. “It’s 3am mum, we need to start getting ready for morning mass. Why are you still asleep?” I said to her as I lifted her up from the bed. “My son! I had a lot to think through earlier this morning when the hymnals were echoing on the street. I realized how faithful God has been to us. You don’t have to worry much, if you keep praying, your grades will improve too, you will be a better person, you are in your final year, but I know God can be merciful to you. I believe”. She said, patting my back to make me feel better.
I Stood up and went straight to my room without saying a word to her, I went on my knees and prayed. I got ready for church, and the day went by with eating of rice and chicken as usual for Easter. The next day, Caleb called me to announce that first semester result has been released. I was a bit scared, but I reluctantly opened my portal to check, and behold, I had straight As! I shouted in shock, which attracted my younger sister to my room. “Dennis what’s wrong? Why did you shout? Are you okay?” She said worriedly. “I... I... I don’t know what to say.” I said as I pointed towards my laptop for her to see. She walked towards my laptop and saw my result. She screamed and ran to my mum to call her attention to my room. My mum saw my result, and we rejoiced. Rita my sister, told me that she prayed for about 3 hours on Easter Sunday morning, just for a change in my result. I was in tears as I worshipped God for showing me his good hands in my life.
